Reflections for the last Full Moon of Summer
When you dig back into the deep ancestral roots of humanity, Summer is a rest season for people and a growth season for plants. Spring energy is one of seeding, Autumn is for harvesting. Winter represents the time to go deeply inwards and work on the roots. It’s about pulling your energy inwards.
Summer has a different tone of restfulness about it. It’s about being outside and gathering energy by enjoying those outdoor activities that can only be done in this season. Other activities are done slowly to recharge yourself. There’s a knowingness to it as Autumn is one of the busiest, high-energy seasons, so the recharge of Summer is done with an eye towards filling your tank to get through all that needs to be done in Autumn to set up Winter as a restful season (and one that you will survive, if you imagine time before we had modern conveniences).
Take a moment to think back thousands of years to your deeper ancestral roots. Life was more agricultural. Summer meant holding space for plants and nurturing their growth. Watering them in the early morning, pulling weeds, pruning and fertilizing to encourage more growth. This was done in the early morning before the sun was high. Not much else was needed. In a sense, Summer is a waiting period between the Spring seeding and the Autumn harvest.
Spring and Fall are big work seasons, and they’re supported by two rest seasons — Summer and Winter. Yet our modern culture tells us to be constant — go, go, go all the time rather than ebb and flow the way nature does.
There are 3 weeks left to Summer. How can you be with what is by being with the now? Big retailers are always trying to get us to think ahead and plan for the next holiday. Rarely are we encouraged to be in the moment, the season of now.
With all the challenges of 2020, I encourage you to give it a try. See if you can call in restfulness before the Autumn Equinox arrives on September 22. Align with the idea of Summer being a time for resting and recharging. Little bursts of activity with many hours of gathering energy. Little bits of focused tending can produce a lot of growth.
Today is a Full Moon, which means there’s energy for reflection. You can ponder these questions anytime, but it’s nice to have added support.
What adds to your energy bank?
What drains your energy?
Be as specific as possible. As the Moon wanes towards the New Moon, see if you can release one or more drain. I call these weeds. The Waning Moon is conducive to weeding as it’s about simplifying to a place of Being once the New Moon arrives.
