Drink it up

Drinking water makes everything easier for my body — from allergy response to brain fog. It also helps me temper over-using caffeine.

But even as an avid water consumer, Winter is the hardest time for me to drink water. Most of my friends would say, “No way!” because I’m known for my water consumption, but it’s true. Drinking enough water is a choice for me; it doesn’t always come naturally.

Some experts say you don’t have to be disciplined to drink water because your body will tell you when it’s thirsty. Even after years of embodiment work, I get this notification at 7:30 at night when I finally slow down… then I’m up half the night dealing with the fallout.

I trick my body into craving water by using these electrolytes. I got hooked on the raspberry flavor even though I’m usually a citrus girl. I use waaay less then the recommended scoop, and each day I surpass my water quota.

Some days I am in tune with my thirst, in which case I don’t use them at all. What’s interesting, though, is that if I can’t get ahead of my thirst to fully quench it, these electrolytes also help. They are doing something in my body that helps the water get to where it needs to go instead of constantly flushing and running through me.

I’m a big fan of electrolytes ever since I ran my first marathon and accidentally over-watered myself and ended up in the medical tent. That was due to an extreme heat situation, so, yes, I use electrolytes year round. I just am more conscious of using them in Winter when I default to drinking only hot things and not monitoring my water intake as easily as I do in warmer months.
